The Road 2 Nationals Blog #1: A Long Road to Somewhere

So for the past year and a half I have set my sights on making the US National Karate Team. Recognized by the World Karate Federation (WKF) and the International Olympic Comittee (IOC), this is the most prestigious karate team in the country. Members of the team are given the opportunity to represent the US in various international competitions, the Pan American Games, and, every two years, the team competes in the World Championships. So, its kind of a big deal. After competing on the NASKA open circuit for several years, and desiring some kind of change, I decided to make the switch and dive in. I trained hard, did my research, and made contacts with people who seemed to be influential. However, when I returned home from Nationals last summer I wasn't on the team and I realized I had a lot to improve upon.

Master Rudolph Muhammad- My father and lifelong instructor

So, since I've returned, I've been back in the lab. My father and lifetime martial arts instructor has served as a pillar of guidance and focus. I connected with two former US team members, Sean Edinger and Colin Humphrey, and they have both started helping me when available. Sean comes down from Warrensburg and trains me on kumite tactics, strength and conditioning, and diet tips.

Sam Murrell (kicking)

Fellow students under my father: Master Konsta Myrick, Greg Farley, and Yazan Hajeh have all served as great sparring partners and motivators. Sam Murrell, for member of the US Olympic TKD team, has decided to give this style of competition a try and training with him has been great.I decided to start a dojo team and prepare them for national competitions. And, of course, when no one is available, it's just me, myself, the dojo, and sweat equity.

In the end, I know that Allah (GOD) will determine the outcome. Man plans, and GOD plans, and GOD is the best of planners. I also know that my martial arts life is much bigger than competitions. However, this is my dream and I'm going for it! If I don't make it, then it wasn't meant to be and I will move on (probably just try harder the next year!!!). But, life isnt worth living if you dont have something to strive for.

So with that, I'm giving it what I got! OSS!!!!
